The Girl in the Red Coat From the Schindler's List Was a Real Person

The Girl in Red is highly symbolic of the world's awareness of the Holocaust. Just like the girl in red, the Holocaust should have been obvious, but it was largely forgotten. During WWII, the media kept the Holocaust quiet to maintain power in Germany. The secret was either well-kept or people didn't want to admit to the terrible reality. Despite being visible, the girl running through the ghetto during the raids went unnoticed by those around her. Schindler observed the raid from a hillside and was struck by the girl's stealth as she walked straight through the crowd unnoticed. Oskar Schindler's observation of the girl in red that day made him aware that the actions of the Nazi party were unacceptable.
It is surprising to note that the Girl in Red was a real person, and her story was not simply a creation of Steven Spielberg to illustrate foreshadowing and symbolism. The girl's name was Genia, and she was being passed around in hiding during the raids.
